Socastee Library Art Workshop for Homeschool Children
Students in ARTE 310 planned and implemented an art workshop event in partnership with Socastee Public Library on February 27, 2014. The CCU students first decided if they wanted to work with elementary or secondary aged children in the workshop. Then they divided into small groups and came up with an activity, based around a book, that would last 15 minutes for elementary or 20 minutes for secondary. Since the workshop time was one hour, elementary students rotated through four different activities, while secondary students rotated through three different activities.
The library saw a need to expand their programming for local homeschool children. Our workshop served three purposes: 1) to provide CCU Intro to Art Ed students an experience with planning and implementing an art making activity with children in a non formal learning space; 2) to partner with Socastee Library to provide a meaningful experience for a homeschool audience, with potential to strengthen relationships between homeschool children and parents with the library; 3) to increase visibility of the CCU art education program in the community.
